American artist Deborah Kass (b. 1952) makes work that combines an interest in popular culture, art history, and identity, and her multi-year Warhol Project is a perfect example of her practice. The series appropriates the iconography of Andy Warhol’s own appropriative Pop Art practice, using his stylistic language to assert Kass’ own subjects and concerns. Her print "Blue Deb" (2000) could at first glance be mistaken for one of Warhol’s widely popular celebrity portraits of Elizabeth Taylor, yet the work is actually a self-portrait of Kass. Blue Deb is one of many self-portraits within the larger project and highlights Kass’s desire to introduce a new subjectivity, particularly that of a queer Jewish-American woman’s subjectivity.
