Tim Tate is known for combining traditional glass craft with modern video elements and digital media to create mixed-media sculptures that explore themes of memory, mortality, and the passage of time. His works often embody themes of transformation, obscuration, revelation, and the interplay of light and shadow. Tate has spent many years championing LGTBQ rights in his practice and designed the New Orleans AIDS Monument. Tate is the co-founder of the Washington Glass Studio in Washington, D.C., and a recipient of multiple awards including the Fulbright Award, the Virginia Groot Foundation award for sculpture, and the 2018 James Renwick Alliance Distinguished Artist. He has exhibited at numerous galleries and arts institutions, including the Boca Raton Museum; The Hermitage State Museum, Russia; and the Hillwood Museum. Tate was also featured alongside Ai Wei Wei and Vic Muniz in the 2019 iteration of Glasstress, a collateral event of the Venice Biennale of Arts focused on studio glass. His work is held in public collections including the Smithsonian's American Art Museum.
