Betty Clark is a painter based
in Asheville, NC. She played a significant role in developing
the River Arts District, helping to organize the first Open Studios in the Riverlink building
in 1991. Clark studied at Agnes Scott College and Georgia State University and has taught
at Warren Wilson College.
Since 1983, an exploration of loss and mourning has been the primary underlying theme
of her work. Her painting is characterized by geometric shapes, contrasting color, and
muted background tones with an overall smooth and flowing effect. Notable exhibitions
include her solo show
To Transgress: Paintings by Betty Clark at the William King Museum in Abingdon, Virginia and
Pioneer Women Painters of the River District, a group exhibit highlighting five mid-90’s Warehouse Studio artists: Betty Clark, Barbara Fisher, Mary Charles “Charlie” Griffin, Marie Hudson and Dawn Rentz. Clark’s paintings are in private, corporate, and public collections throughout the southern United States, including the Asheville Art Museum, as well as in France, Sweden, and Mexico.
