Mother And Child Pin By Romare Bearden
Inspired by Mother and Child by Romare Bearden
Romare Bearden’s (1911-1988) print "Mother and Child" (1971) takes the iconic imagery of the Madonna and Child as its inspiration, but intentionally uses the language of collage to give these figures part mask-like faces against an abstract, vibrant backdrop. Christian imagery was a frequent subject matter for Bearden, who sought to understand the emotions and actions within religious iconography and stories as a means of exploring humanity. The print was first published in a group portfolio titled "Conspiracy: The Artist as Witness," which featured several prominent artists responding to the political demonstrations against the Vietnam War during and after the trial of the Chicago Seven.
