Sara Hall

Being born and raised in New York City offered me many opportunities, one being easy access to great art. My uncle, Alan Kapelner, a writer who lived among artists in Greenwich Village, introduced me to the gallery scene at a young age. My parents, both teachers, also encouraged my talent to draw and paint by sending me to Art&Design High School in Manhattan and then to the Rhode Island School of Design.

After college I had the good fortune to work in some great places. I was an assistant art director at Marvel Comics and it was as much fun as it sounds. I then freelanced for several magazines at Condé Nast Publishing, Vogue being my favorite. I was lucky to stay at Vogue for 25 years. It was an eye-opening experience filled with the latest trends in art, fashion and so much more.

In 2015 my husband, Bill and I decided to leave New York for Asheville enticed by the mountains and the art. I freelanced for The Laurel of Asheville as a graphic designer and Bill, also an artist, shows his work at Momentum Gallery in downtown Asheville.

While living here, I have been drawn to the amazing crafts and artistry all around North Carolina, and have found my love for textiles and hand-quilting. I have since joined the WNCQG (Western North Carolina Quilters Guild) which has taught me so much more about different techniques. I am inspired by the artwork of others, my father's stained glass, my husband's etchings and collages, and the many glass, painting, ceramic and textile artists in the area. The guild has also opened my eyes to the history and beauty of quilt making.
